Congratulations to the students at the University of Maryland for winning first place in the 2015 EPA Campus RainWorks Challenge for the Demonstration Project category! The Campus RainWorks Challenge was a national competition that started in 2015 between 77 teams of students from various universities to demonstrate how stormwater management can improve the environment. The student lead team at the University of Maryland was comprised of six students: Kathleen Hayes, George Sorvalis, Matt Zerfas, Emma Giese, Sharon Hartzell and Jason Renkenberger. The design included 40 percent of impervious surface, over 17,000 square feet of new vegetation space, 56 new trees and 8,640 square feet of pedestrian space. Rick Scaffidi and Elizabeth Walker, a former EQR intern who worked on LID/ESD projects, both provided additional assistance to the project.
